The talk will discuss how NASA flight qualified a commercial smartphone for use on a human-rated spacecraft (the ISS) and how that became the foundation of three free-flying robots permanently installed on the ISS and used regularly.  The talk will conclude on how the strategies used and high levels of risk acceptance catalysed significant reductions in technology development costs and timelines for NASA.
